But what is stainless steel? And what about other corrosion resistant alloys such as titanium and nickel based alloys? To give you a better understanding of these materials and a better appreciation of its uses we have developed this section of our website.

Stainless steel is a durable, eco-friendly, and low-maintenance material that can be used for building, tools, cutlery, sculpture, and any other number of things. It is an alloy that is made with at least 10.5% chromium content. It is called stainless because of its natural resistance to rust and corrosion.

What Are the Types of Stainless Steel?

Stainless Steel comes in five main types. Ferritic stainless steels are generally the least expensive, but don't have as broad an application. Martensitic stainless steels can be hardened by quenching and tempering and are used mainly in cutlery, general engineering, and aerospace. When hardened, they can become brittle, and so are not hardened all the way or are not used in general construction.

Austenitic stainless steels are the most widely used they are the most corrosion-resistant. Because of a chromium-rich oxide film that forms on the surface of the steel, it is able to withstand corrosion and rust for much longer periods of time than other metals. This film can reform itself, so scratches will not damage the steel. The only thing necessary to the oxide film is oxygen. If it is deprived of oxygen, it can fail, leaving parts open to pitting (where rust and decay gets in under the surface and is often undetected). It is also important to be certain that the stainless steel you purchase is high quality. If the film has been prevented from forming by contact with other metals, stainless steel can rust very rapidly.

Stainless steel is generally more expensive than other building materials. However, it is a long-term investment, as it takes less upkeep and lasts longer. Stainless steel is very easy to clean. It doesn't need any materials to go over it, lowering material costs. It is fairly lightweight for the amount of strength it provides, opening up construction options.
